How to make your alloy rims shine

Thoroughly, gently, and effectively: Five steps to a brilliant result.

Many car owners wash their car at least once a month. However, alloy wheels – now almost standard – are often neglected in the process. This is surprising, given that they are among the parts of a vehicle that are subjected to the most wear and tear in everyday use.

Brake dust, road salt in winter, and other types of road dirt take their toll and can lead to corrosion.

To prevent wheel cleaning from becoming hard labour – or, in the worst case, damaging the material – you should clean them regularly and, above all, thoroughly. And, if done step by step, it is definitely not rocket science.

Step 1: Pre-cleaning

At a self-service car wash, use a pressure washer to remove the worst of the dirt from the rims (as a general rule, maintain a distance of 30 to 50 cm). Then dry the wheels with a cloth or a soft microfibre towel.

Step 2: Spray on the wheel cleaner and leave to soak

Next, spray on a suitable wheel cleaner – please avoid acidic or alkaline variants – generously and evenly from a short distance. Then allow it to soak in for three to five minutes.

Step 3: Remove stubborn dirt

Then scrub the alloy wheels thoroughly, ideally using a wheel brush and/or a non-scratch sponge. A toothbrush or a small, stiff brush is ideal for cleaning hard-to-reach areas.
Tip: When spraying on the wheel cleaner, wear rubber or disposable gloves to protect your hands from the cleaner.

Step 4: Rinse off wheel cleaner

Afterwards, rinse off the wheel cleaner thoroughly and completely using a pressure washer and remove any remaining residue with a soft microfibre towel. Allow the wheels to dry or dry them with a cloth or towel.

Step 5: Apply a sealant

Apply a sealant to the completely dry wheels. Depending on the product, this is either sprayed on or applied with a cloth. This protective layer prevents dirt from adhering as strongly and makes the next rim cleaning process easier.

Important: Only clean your rims when the surface is as cool as possible – for example, not after a long drive or in direct sunlight.
